Due to the detrimental effects of homelessness on children, Family Gateway offers a unique Education Program for families in our care. Family Gateway ensures that children are enrolled in school and that toddlers are offered a formal assessment and the opportunity to attend an early childhood education program or preschool through local partner agencies. Family Gateway also provides after-school and summer programming, tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance and recreational activities.
Through our Early Childhood Education Program, 100% of all of our children age 6 weeks to 5 years are offered a formal assessment with our Early Education Children’s Case Manager who also works with these families to ensure that children are offered the opportunity to attend an early childhood education program through local partner programs and agencies.
We assess children using the Brigance, a screening tool that is used to identify learning delays, as well as strengths and weaknesses in language, motor, self-help, social –emotional and cognitive skills. Following the baseline assessment, the Early Education Children’s Case Manager develops an individualized educational case plan for each child, supports parental interaction with children using Parents as Teachers and other curriculum, typically for a period of 10-12 weeks, reassesses using the Brigance, continues to monitor progress, and provides additional interventions as needed.
On average, we see a 25.9 point increase in our children after the 10-12 weeks.
