Education & Childcare

The instability of homelessness is traumatic for children and devastating to a child’s brain development. At Family Gateway, we know how important early childhood education is to break the cycle of homelessness. Our staff ensures that children are enrolled in school and provides after-school and summer programming including:

  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Homework assistance
  • Recreational and enrichment activities

Because early childhood education is so important to us, we make sure our children get into preschool programs and also provide onsite care for those who are on waiting lists for Early Head Start and other similar programs.

Homeless preschool children are likely to exhibit developmental delays. The BRIGANCE is a screening tool that is used by staff to identify learning delays, as well as strengths and weaknesses in language, motor, self-help, social –emotional and cognitive skills. This assessment empowers parents to help prepare their child for Kindergarten.
