Volunteer with Family Gateway

Volunteers at Family Gateway become an extension of our staff and help in many different ways.  Whether you work directly with our clients or behind the scenes, you will have an opportunity to make a lasting difference.

Volunteer Opportunities

We have multiple opportunities at Family Gateway to fit your interests and talents. We encourage you to be creative about ways you would like to help families in crisis. If you have an idea on how to help, we are eager to partner with you.

• Adopt-a-Room

  • Fill a room with everything needed for a new family at the Annette G. Strauss Gateway Center.
    

    
    

• Cook a Meal

  • Cook and/or serve meals to our families. Meals are served at 12:00PM and 6:00PM seven days a week.
    
    

• Computer Class for adults

  • Teach entry level computer skills.
    
    

• Job Readiness Class

  • Assist with resume building and interviewing skills.
    
    

• Speakers Bureau

  • Group of volunteers that can prepare and present a speech about Family Gateway to various organizations as needed
    
    

• Resource Development
  
  

  • Help organize a “drive” that would provide items we are in need of for the clients at the Center and PSH and Gateway Apartments.  (Example: appropriate work attire, blue jeans, undergarments for women, men & children)
    
    

• Adult Mentors
  
  

  • Adopt a client at the Center and be a mentor to this person.  Help teach and influence them to communicate with others in a positive way.  Role model for the future
    
    

• Financial Literacy Classes
  
  

  • Teach basic knowledge on how to open a checking/saving account, balance checkbook, prepare a monthly budget, how to save for the future
    
    

• Mock Interview Classes
  
  

  • Conduct a class to help adults with interviewing skills (mock interviews) & how to dress for success, etc.
    
    

• Tutor
  
  

  • Groups or individuals can assist the afterschool program staff by tutoring students and assisting with homework. Tutoring can be scheduled Monday-Thursday, between 4-6PM.
    
    

• Childcare Assistant
  
  

  • Assist with children’s activities. 
    
    

• Landscape Aide
  
  

  • Assist the Facilities Director at the Gateway Apartment’s with landscape, repairs, maintenance and painting.
    
    

• Fundraise/Donate
  
  

  • Donate by phone, mail or online;  organize a fundraiser.

Board Committees

We welcome interested members of the community to serve on various Board committees as members-at-large. If you are interested in serving on a Board committee, please contact Pam Riggs at 214.823.4500, ext. 101 or via email.

Family Gateway does provide opportunities for Community Service Restitution. All volunteers must submit to a national background check, including criminal and/or sexual offender background checks.
