Permanent Supportive Housing

Communities across the nation are embracing permanent supportive housing to achieve positive long-term results for homeless children and families with special needs.

What is Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH)?
Family Gateway's new permanent supportive housing program couples stable long-term housing with individualized, onsite case management services for both parents and children. Families are strengthened and children nurtured by a support system that provides comprehensive clinical, educational and enrichment opportunities.

Family Gateway will manage family selection and ongoing case management for 50 families at three residential properties. The program is planned for a 5-15 year duration and will include a total of 150 families.

Who is eligible?
Families with children that have participated in transitional housing programs at Family Gateway or partner agencies and require ongoing services due to a physical, mental or behavioral disability may be eligible to enter permanent supportive housing. Family Gateway qualifies all families and assists them in completing the required documentation and interview processes.

Families pay rent based on their income and are accountable to actively participate in their success plan to remain in the program.

Download eligibility guidelines and requirements here.

Where are the PSH properties?
Each of the three PSH properties will be filled and staffed one at a time to ensure a full range of services are available to each family. Location and availability will be discussed with qualifying families.

What services will be provided to families?
Individualized professional case management and a co-created success plan provide the foundation for a family's ongoing development. Additional programs and services include: clinical and behavioral counseling; opportunities to improve parenting, relationship, budgeting and employment skills; vocational training; children's after school educational, mentoring and enrichment programs.

What are the program goals?
Permanent supportive housing will serve families who are currently unable to become self-sufficient due to a disability. In addition to providing stability for parents and children, educational and enrichment programs will focus specifically on equipping children with the skills they need to make positive choices for their future and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

Where can I get more information?
Families or partner agencies seeking additional program details, please contact Lucy Washington for assistance. For media inquiries, please contact Leslie Boysen.

How can I help these families?
Families moving from transitional to permanent supportive housing will need furnishings, bedding, household items, cleaning supplies and more to begin living independently. By donating these items to Family Gateway, you can help to provide a warm welcome to new families and equip them for success.

Contact Shama Shams, community relations manager, at 214-823-4500 x 106 for more details or to donate items.
